Section Two: Lighthouse Family - I Wish I Knew

Aspects of performance/Mode of address

The mode of address is direct, as the actor in the scene is looking directly at the audience throughout the video. The man on the train is the singer in 'Lighthouse Family'and throughout the video, we see him walk through the train, looking at other passengers which then the shot becomes that of the passengers' life. There are no dance routines or real elements of performance, as it is mostly narrative based.

Narrative
The video has a non linear narrative because there is use of flashbacks when showing the passengers' lives. There is a clear beginning to the videoas the man starts to walk through the train being accompanied by a woman. Both the middle and end sections of the video are also clear, as the man sees flashbacks of the passengers' lives on the train as he walks by. At the end of the video, the train stops, and the passengers move off the train and out of the station up to the outside world.

How does the video create an image for the star/artist/band
The video creates a positive image for the band in that it portrays them as caring people, as they are shown to be motivated to change people's lives for the better. The video also shows them as a relatively 'normal' group of people as they are all shown to blend in with the other people on the train.

How do the visual elements relate to the song (Illustrate/Amplification/Disjuncture
The visuals in this video amplify the lyrics to the song, giving the message about speaking about problems rather than keeping them hidden away as he looks into the passengers' lives. The video gives a sense of being trapped through the use of the train, this is changed at the end of the video when the passengers exit the train and leave the trainstation.

Mise-en-Scene
The setting is inside an underground train. There are 'normal' people in the train dressed in regular, every day clothing. The lead singer also wears regular clothing in order to blend in.

Use of Camera

An extreme long shot is used as the train moves into the station at the beginning. Close ups of faces are used before each flashback. A tracking shot is used as the man walks through the train. Zooms are used shortly before the flashbacks into people's lives, along with mid shots of the people. A point of view shot is also used with the man cooking, close ups and extreme close ups of the woman dancing, showing her body. An extreme close up is used on the main girl's face, shortly before her flashback. Panning shots are also used in the train.
Editing

Representation
Everyone on the train appear to belong to working class backgrounds. There seems to be a class divide when the lead singer appears to possibly hold higher status class because of the suit that he wears though he still blends in with the other passengers on the train. The female in the video is blonde, which is stereotypical of what is socially excepted as 'pretty'. She appears to have an angelic quality about her because of her pale skin and also because she stands out on the train which highlights her beauty. There may be a religious aspect to the video as the train seems to be unhappy and dark which could be seen as hell where as the exit to the train station being seen as a sort of heaven or 'enlightenment'. The lead singer also seems to be a sort of spiritual healer and cleanses the passenger's souls before they go up, almost like followers.

Special Effects
There are no CGI effects or other special effects used in this video.

Genre
This song's genre is contemporary soul.

Audience
The target audience would be aged around 25-40, this is because of the easy to listen to, mellow sound.
